B.C. strengthens mine-waste storage after Mt. Polley disaster

The Vancouver Sun reported on changes by the province that aim to strengthen safety of mine-waste storage facilities and their earth-and-rock dams.

UBC mining professor Dirk van Zyl, also a member of the government-appointed independent panel that made recommendations to the province, said the changes to the mining code are far-reaching.

“These changes put B.C. in a leadership position and clearly set the groundwork for a more comprehensive approach to consistent tailings management in the Ministry of Energy and Mines province,” he said.
