High seas fishing isn’t just destructive—it’s unprofitable

National Geographic highlighted research that found more than half of the world’s industrial fisheries would not be profitable if it were not for forced labour and current subsidies.

The project was conducted by researchers from the Sea Around Us project at UBC and the University of Western Australia, the National Geographic Society, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Global Fishing Watch.
