The disproportionate stress plaguing American teachers

The Atlantic cited UBC research for a story on unrealistic standards expected of teachers.

Researchers at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health collected saliva samples from several hundred students in grades four to seven and analyzed their cortisol levels. They found children’s cortisol levels were higher in classrooms where educators reported greater burnout, or emotional fatigue.

“This suggests that stress contagion might be taking place in the classroom among students and their teachers,” said Eva Oberle, the lead author of the study.
