Stationary bikes in the classroom

A Globe and Mail op-ed questions the trend in North America for “self-regulation” for children, an example of which is the recent installation of a spin bike in one Dartmouth, N.S., primary classroom to quiet restless or agitated kids.

The article cited Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, of UBC’s human development, learning and culture research unit. Schonert-Reichl has found just one large-scale independent study documenting actual benefit from MindUP, an approach to teaching self-regulation.

“So little [in education] has actually been formed by rigorous research, as opposed to the medical field,” Schonert-Reichl was quoted as saying.
