Untreated sleep apnea doubles your risk of workplace injury

New UBC research shows that people with untreated sleep apnea are twice as likely to get hurt at work compared to those without the condition, reports the Huffington Post.

“People with sleep apnea have decreased cognitive function, vigilance, attention, and motor function. And we know from previous studies that individuals with untreated sleep apnea are at increased risk of motor vehicle crashes,” said study author and UBC medicine professor Najib T. Ayas.

Ayas and colleagues studied 1,236 patients referred to UBC Hospital’s sleep disorder lab and compared the injury claims of patients who were diagnosed with sleep apnea to those of patients who didn’t have the condition.
