Vancouver’s newest park dedicated to help bee population

Leonard Foster, a UBC biochemistry professor, spoke to Roundhouse Radio about the new pop-up park and garden at 5th Avenue and Pine Street that aims to increase pollinators necessary for food production.

Foster has been tracking the decline in native bee pollinators and said urban gardens are most beneficial for wild bees.

“These kinds of gardens tend to not have a very significant impact on the managed honeybee population, partly because it is managed,” he said. “The effect on managed honeybees is relatively minor, the effect on the native bee population is really huge. It is a very important facility to pursue.”
