Five things to know about surviving Diwali with diabetes

The Vancouver Sun quoted Nadia Khan, a researcher and professor of internal medicine at UBC, for a story on maintaining a healthy diet during the Indian celebration of Diwali.

Khan studies the connections between ethnicity and chronic illness and said vegetarians are not necessarily healthier.

“In our community in B.C., a lot of people are vegetarians so they automatically assume their diet is very healthy. But both portion size and the high level of saturated fats is a problem. There’s a lot of ghee (clarified butter), whole milk and yogurt,” she said.
