Scientists investigate fumaroles atop dormant volcano

The Vancouver Sun highlighted work by UBC volcanologist Kelly Russell atop a dormant volcano near Pemberton that is expected to explode one day.

Russell and Glyn Williams-Jones from Simon Fraser University visited Mount Meager twice to take measurements after fumarole activity was reported in the area. Fumaroles are gas vents in the earth’s surface.

The volcanologists found steam, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, but not sulphur dioxide, which may have indicated the presence of magma and a potential eruption.
