Study finds kids see teaching as an act of kindness

The Kelowna Capital News featured a study from UBC’s Okanagan campus that examined how children view teaching.

Researchers in the education department surveyed 650 local kids in kindergarten to Grade 3 and found that 42 per cent of them believe that teaching is an act of kindness.

“Understanding how kindness is conceptualized and perceived by students has implications for educators hoping to foster pro-social behaviour in and among students,” said education professor John Tyler Binfet. “Early elementary students are, by and large, attentive to kindness modelled by teachers and are able to identify characteristics of teachers’ kind acts.”
