Remembering prominent Vancouver architect Bing Thom

The Globe and Mail reported on the passing of prominent Vancouver architect and UBC alumnus Bing Thom.

Leslie Van Duzer, a UBC professor of architecture who knew Thom, said he knew how to evoke public comfort in his buildings.

“I think his greatest legacy is his understanding of the power of architecture to build communities,” she said. “Much more important than the building itself is its role as a catalyst for its surroundings and its community, the community it serves.”

Thom completed a bachelor of architecture degree at UBC and worked on well-known projects including UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, the Mead Centre in Washington DC, and the Pacific Canada Pavilion at the Vancouver Aquarium.
