Canada-China Relations

Paul Evans, a professor at UBC’s Institute of Asian Research, did an interview with CBC Power and Politics about the Prime Minister’s trip to China and China’s human rights record.

“Mr. Trudeau’s approach to human rights has been strikingly similar to almost all of his predecessors both in that idea of emphasizing respect but also taking in up some hard issues,” said Evans. “What’s distinctive… is on the issue of the rule of law. … Under Mr. Trudeau it appears that the substance of serious human rights dialogue with China, it’s not just about talking, it’s not just about raising issues, it’s about building capacities and interactions.”

Evans was also quoted in a story in the National Post.
