Port in a storm

Michael Byers, a UBC professor and Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law, spoke to the National Post for a story on a port closure in Churchill, Manitoba.

Byers said the sudden closure of the port, Canada’s only deep-water Arctic port, will not affect national sovereignty.

“What is important, though, is the economic development of Canada’s north,” he says. “That port is on our Arctic coastline, on salt water. Any plans for our northern development — mining, shipping, tourism — have to include it.”
