The murky case for Victoria sewage treatment

The Tyee interviewed Richard Pawlowicz, a UBC professor in the earth, ocean and atmospheric science department, for a story on the need for sewage treatment in different parts of B.C.

In Victoria there is natural flushing that disperses the sewage in the Pacific, making sewage treatment uneccesary, Pawlowicz said.

“The flow rates are higher, there is a lot more mixing, the tides are racing back and forth — but also, you have this huge outflow of water going out into the Pacific,” he said. “So if you drop something in here, it very quickly spreads out. The dilution factor is very high.”
