Health staff knew inmate who died of overdose took pills

Maclean’s published a Canadian Press article quoting Dr. Evan Wood, a UBC professor in the Faculty of Medicine, after questions were raised about how prison medical staff dealt with a inmate who died of an overdose.

According to a police report, the man told a Cape Breton prison nurse he had taken five “nerve pill(s)” and appeared intoxicated before he was imprisoned.

“If these circumstances occurred even in a regular hospital bed, the patient would need to be transferred to a monitored setting … where resuscitative measures could be implemented and the patient closely monitored,” Wood said.

The story also appeared on CBC and CTV.
