IOC bans GIFs from Rio, internet reacts poorly

CBC quoted Elicia Salzburg, a UBC professor at the Sauder School of Business, for a story on the ban of animated GIFs using Olympic material.

The International Olympic Committee decided to shut down the use of GIFs. Salzburg said the IOC is trying control how its content is viewed and also justify charging the amount it does for broadcast rights.

“It would be a reasonable interpretation that they’re doing this so that they don’t splinter or fracture the audience from their traditional media stream,” Salzberg says. “They want to preserve the value that they offer in their relationships with these official sponsors.”
