Canada’s top court to weigh in on extradition in slaying case

The Globe and Mail interviewed Nicole Barrett, a law professor and director of UBC’s International Justice and Human Rights Clinic, for a story on a young B.C. woman slain in India and the related questions regarding India’s treatment of convicted criminals.

She said the Supreme Court of Canada is entering an debate on whether deference should be extended to India that declares its law will address concerns identified by Canadian courts.

Barrett said an “old-school” approach says that countries deserve deference when it comes to legal approaches, but now questions are being raised about this.
