The blob that cooked the Pacific

National Geographic highlighted the phenomenon of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean that has destroyed large amounts of marine life. Sea lions are falling sick after eating toxic algae that has bloomed as a result of warming waters, and whales are dying too, according to the experts interviewed for the article.

Andrew Trites, director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at UBC, was quoted as saying that toxic algae is the likely culprit for dead whales found off the Alaskan coast.
