Vancouver slaps 15% tax on foreign house buyers

The Guardian featured an interview with Thomas Davidoff, a UBC economics professor, for a story on the potential impacts of B.C.’s new foreign buyer tax.

“Some foreign buyers may find a way to get around the tax,” he said. “And some people will just pay the 15 per cent. They’re rich and they’ll do it.”

Davidoff was also quoted on the same topic for CBC and a Canadian Press article published on MSN and Castanet.

UBC economics professor Tsur Somerville spoke to Global News on the same topic.

“People who are thinking of buying or thinking there is going to be a drop in prices in response to the tax are waiting to see how that plays out, but I don’t think I would judge a policy entirely on one week’s worth of data,” Somerville said.
