Turmoil rocks Canadian research community

Stat News reported on the impacts of a new system for assessing grant proposals and featured a UBC online survey.

The survey led by Liisa Galea, a UBC neuroscientist, is aiming to gauge the impact of Canadian Institutes of Health Research funding changes. The survey found that 25 per cent of the 410 people who responded so far are seriously considering moving away from Canada and 70 per cent said they are delaying the hiring and mentoring of graduate students or post-docs.

“These decisions will have significant repercussions for years to come for health research in Canada,” Galea said.
