Turkey’s Erdogan uses FaceTime to thwart military coup

UBC journalism school director Alfred Hermida was interviewed for the Globe and Mail’s story on the use of social media in a national crisis.

Turkey’s president used FaceTime in the midst of an attempted military coup to address the nation as his message was broadcast on CNN’s Turkish affiliate.

“You need to get a message to the mosques for them to broadcast. You do that through WhatsApp, you do that through FaceTime, through social media,” said Hermida. “You have this really intricate feedback loop of old and new media working together, in this case to counter the brute force of the military.”
