Women’s period seen as barrier to medical research

CBC News interviewed Dr. Jerilynn Prior, a UBC professor of endocrinology, about the consequences when women are underrepresented as participants in medical research.

Women are seen to be more complex because of their monthly cycles, which means some drugs prescribed to women were only tested on men.

“Half the human race doesn’t have accurate information about the response to whatever the intervention is,” Prior said. “It’s like comparing apples and oranges.”
