Creating co-housing space within a condo tower

A group of Vancouverites are pitching an idea that could be the first of its kind in North America: a co-housing project within a condo tower, reports the Globe and Mail.

Co-housing started in Europe and usually requires finding suitable land and having it developed, but the Vancouver version would purchase a block of condos within a project that’s still in the planning stage.

The group is working on designs with architect and UBC professor Inge Roecker.

“What is it about a village that makes it social? I wash dishes, and I see out the window,” said Roecker. “I see kids run by, I am connected. How we build now in towers is exactly opposite. It’s partly because of economics.”
