Grow your furniture

UBC architecture professor Joseph Dahmen’s mushroom benches was the focus of a CTV national segment Monday night.

The seats comprise a blend of oyster mushroom spores and alder sawdust topped with clear acrylic and have been installed on campus. Dahmen noted that fungi could be used to produce sustainable furniture and building materials.

“Fungus is fast-growing, it is reasonably resilient and it doesn’t need very many energy inputs to grow,” said Dahmen.
