Acne drug’s harm to fetus a worry despite prevention efforts

Many women prescribed an acne drug with potential side effects did not comply with conditions like using birth control to prevent pregnancy, reports CBC News.

The drug, commonly sold as Accutane, can damage a fetus.

UBC dermatology professor Shannon Humphrey, who wasn’t involved in the study, said for many patients, the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks. However, she welcomed efforts to create greater awareness of the nature of the drug.
