A Farm and Dairy article about the ideal environment for beef and dairy cows to give birth described a study by UBC’s Animal Welfare program. The researchers built secluded maternity pens and found that most cows that calved during the daytime used the pen. But when they had to share it with a partner, they avoided the enclosure during calving.
