Early BC wildfires raise multiple concerns

UBC forestry dean John Innes discussed the early start of B.C.’s wildfire season on Global BC 1.

“It is definitely a very early start. The earliest fires last year were about a month from now,” said Innes. “It’s very difficult to predict what the rest of the season would look like but if it were to continue like this then yes, it would be a disaster.”

Innes added that scientists have been predicting for some time that fire seasons would start earlier and earlier and last longer than in the past, and that the trend is related to global warming. “So we are seeing the effect very clearly,” Innes said.
