Being in traffic could mean YOUR child will get asthma

A UBC-led study has found that exposure to pollution while still in the womb greatly increases a child’s chances of developing asthma before age five, reports the Daily Express.

The researchers followed more than 65,000 children until the age of 10 and analyzed their mothers’ postal codes.

“Our study results highlight the importance of exposure to pollution while babies are still in the womb,” said UBC researcher and lead author Hind Sbihi. “Air pollution from traffic sources increased the risk of developing asthma during early years before children reach school age, even in an urban area with relatively low levels of air pollution.”
