UBC students will showcase their engineering talents in a fast-paced driverless mini-car race. Roughly the size of soccer balls, the robot cars will navigate several racetracks completely autonomously, guided only by on-board sensors and control systems.
The event will feature five rounds of racing across several challenging terrains. which will test the vehicles’ ability to steer, stop and traverse elevated beams without falling off.
The event will start with an open-house showcase of the 20 vehicles, which were created by second-year mechanical engineering students over three weeks. Students will be available to describe design challenges and their vehicle’s features.
“This project challenges students to apply creativity, engineering insight, and practical skill to tackle complex, open-ended problems,” says Prof. Peter Ostafichuk of UBC’s Faculty of Applied Science.
NB: The event is open to the public, but space is limited. Please contact Wendy McHardy to attend the competition at 604-827-4762 or Wendy.McHardy@ubc.ca. For photos of previous competitions, click here.
