UBC Community United Way Campaign launch
The UBC Community United Way Campaign kicks off with a new strategy this year. The goal is to increase community participation and curb paper waste by launching an online donation system called United Way @ Work.
The UBC Vancouver campus community is invited to join The Great Pancake Race – Batter Up! on October 29 and PJ Day for United Way on November 13. People may also participate in bake sales, raffles and 50/50 draws across the campus. Top prizes include Vancouver Canucks tickets and a one-year campus parking pass.

Department of Family Practice professors honoured
Two UBC Dept. of Family Practice professors were honoured by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for their achievements in family medicine practice.
Prof. Stefan Grzybowski received the Family Medicine Researcher of the Year Award and clinical Asst. Prof. John P. Pawlovich was named one of Canada’s Family Physicians of the Year.
Prof. Grzybowski is the scientific co-director of the BC Rural and Remote Health Research Network and co-director of the Centre for Rural Health Research. Asst. Prof. Pawlovich practices in the northern community of Fraser Lake and collaborates with multiple First Nation communities, the Northern Health Authority and the remote community of Grassy Plains.

Surgery professor named Program Director of the Year
Asst. Prof. Ravi Sidhu, Dept. of Surgery, was named Program Director of the Year by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Asst. Prof. Sidhu was one of two people awarded for demonstrating a commitment to innovation in medical residency education.

Professor emerita receives Alumni Achievement Award
Prof. Emerita Judith Hall, Dept. of Medical Genetics and Pediatrics, has received the Outstanding Faculty Community Service Award to be given at the UBC Alumni Achievement Awards this November.
Dr. Hall, a leading pediatrician and clinical geneticist, had focused her research on disorders of growth such as dwarfism and birth defects. In 1981, she became UBC professor of medical genetics and director of Genetic Services for BC. Later on, she became the Head of UBC Department of Pediatrics and BC Children’s Hospital.

Landscape Architecture student received international research award
Landscape Architecture graduate student Katy Amon received the American Society of Landscape Architects Honour Award for Research.
Amon’s project entitled Road Rights of Way: Connective Conduits developed a methodology for integrating viable ecosystems and habitats into marginalized urban spaces to augment quality and connectivity across scales, using birds as a biodiversity indicator.

Social housing design competition winners announced
The winners of Future Social, a social housing design competition for students of School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), were announced recently by the BC Ministry of Housing and Social Development.
Graduate student Matthew Beall won first place for his design which incorporates light, fresh air and spaciousness that best address client needs.
Daniel Irvine, Elizabeth Laing and Ariel Mieling placed second for their entry Dorothy House which focused on social housing for mothers and children by innovatively designing individual units and shared social space that responds to the specific needs of parenting.
Emma Artis, Lauren Macaulay and Angelique Pilon placed third for their entry Triune which represented a sophisticated example of how social services can be delicately interwoven with social housing while generating a strong sense of community and support.

UBC Library iPod Touch promo
UBC Library is promoting the use of 3M self-serve book check-out units at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Koerner Library and Woodward Library.
