Vancouver Airbnb revenues driven by empty homes

Daily Hive reported on research by UBC School of Community and Regional Planning student Iain Marjoribanks.

Marjoribanks found that 53 per cent of the 3,424 active Airbnb listings in Vancouver as of last December were run by commercial hosts who rented out from one to 20-plus units and didn’t live in any of them.

“The majority of Airbnb listings in Vancouver are taking housing away from residents,” Marjoribanks told Daily Hive by email. “If every Airbnb in Vancouver were rented as a long-term rental, the city’s vacancy rate would rise from 0.8% to 2.0%.”
