A new way to predict forest wildfires developed

The Canadian Press highlighted research from UBC that predicts when and where fires caused by humans are most likely to occur in the spring.

“We found that conditions were just right in the spring of 2016 to allow the Fort McMurray fire to spread rapidly to the surrounding leafless vegetation,” said Paul Pickell, a postdoctoral fellow in the faculty of forestry.

The CP story appeared on Radio Canada and in the National Post.
