Eric Yoshida awarded Order of British Columbia

Nikkei Voice reported that Eric Yoshida, a UBC professor of medicine was awarded the Order of British Columbia, the highest distinction the province can give to a citizen.

“For the future it inspired me to do more – I’m not going to retire anytime soon,” he said. “The fight goes on, I’ll be here for a long time.”

Among his many medical achievements Yoshida found that B.C. First Nations people are more likely to suffer from primary biliary cirrhosis and autoimmune liver disease, which shifted the medical assumption from negative stereotypes that First Nations coming into hospitals with liver disease were alcoholics.
