Yves Tiberghien, director of the Institute of Asian Research at UBC, discussed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s first trip to China in a Roundhouse Radio interview (14:25 mark).
Tiberghien said the government had a hard time building consensus around its China policy, but played its cards deftly in the end, winning positive reception in Chinese media and from the Chinese people. He thought the Prime Minister wisely avoided committing to issues where there is limited support, such as free trade.
