UBC researchers discover cure for ‘concrete cancer’

Kelowna Capital News reported on UBCO engineering research that cures so-called ‘concrete cancer.’

Researchers can now calm a chemical reaction that has caused glass-fed concrete to weaken, expand and crack. This reaction is known as concrete cancer.

“Researchers have been looking for a long time for ways to reliably make use of glass in concrete construction, and we believe that this research represents a significant advancement in that search,” said associate engineering professor Shahria Alam.
