Genetic insights may help kids battling developmental delays

UPI reported on new medical treatment including researchers from the UBC medicine department and BC Children’s Hospital that may change thousands of lives through genetic screening.

Researchers can identify the genetic underpinning of intellectual disabilities and determine the right intervention.

Dr. Clara van Karnebeek is principal investigator with UBC’s Center for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics and a pediatrician and biochemical geneticist at BC Children’s Hospital. She said doctors were able to offer targeted treatments in four of 10 cases.
