NZ Fisheries catch under-reported: Expert reaction

A story in the New Zealand Herald reported on reactions to research published as a working paper as part of the Sea Around Us project by UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries.

Findings showed that New Zealand’s total fisheries catch since 1950 is actually 2.7 times higher than what was reported officially.

Commercial catch and fish discarded for being the wrong size or species were the main reasons for unreported catches. The article includes analyses that have different findings than the Sea Around Us project.
