How is this possible? Mysterious microbe is missing mitochondria

The LA Times reports on a study co-authored by UBC’s Anna Karnkowska detailing an unprecedented finding in the scientific world.

Eukaryotes are the group of organisms including humans, other animals, plants, fungi, and some microscopic creatures. Karnkowska, an evolutionary biologist, was one of the scientists who found the first example of a eukaryote lacking any form of mitochondria, the organelles which power cells.

“This is exciting for me and for many of us searching for these very divergent eukaryotes, which of course help us to understand better the whole evolution of eukaryotes,” said Karnkowska.
