UBC prof’s earthquake warning system is ready for the big one

Carlos Ventura, director of UBC’s Earthquake Engineering Research Facility and his team have installed early earthquake detection sensors in more than 40 locations in and around metro Vancouver.

This early warning system will detect the primary waves of an earthquake–which are non-destructive, unlike the secondary waves that can damage buildings–and give people a few seconds to take cover, which may be enough to save their life.
