Engineering professor named one of Canada’s most powerful women

Engineering professor Elizabeth Croft has been named a Women’s Executive Network’s 2014 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 award winner. The awards recognize Canada’s female leaders who have become agents of change in reshaping Canadian organizations at the highest levels. A tireless advocate for women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), Croft mentors and encourages women to pursue and remain in STEM careers. Click here for more information.

UBC professor honoured with Prix Galien Canada Research Award

Professor Brett Finlay has been awarded the Prix Galien Canada Research Award 2014, the most prestigious award in the field of Canadian pharmaceutical research and innovation.  Finlay holds joint appointments in the departments of biochemistry and molecular biology and microbiology and immunology.  He is recognized for his major contributions to microbiology, pharmacology, vaccine development, human and animal disease pathogenesis, and for transforming our understanding of bacterial interaction with the host cell. Law professor receives 2014 Georges A. Goyer, QC Memorial Award for Distinguished Service

Law professor Isabel Grant has received the Goyer Award, the highest honour given by the Canadian Bar Association B.C. Branch. It is a memorial to Georges A. Goyer, who was an adjunct professor at UBC Faculty of Law and director of their legal clinic.  Grant is one of Canada’s leading criminal law scholars and has made significant contributions in areas such as sexual assault, homicide, and to the legal approach to nondisclosure of HIV infection.  For more information, click here.

Nursing professor receives 2014 Pat Griffin Scholar Award

Each year, the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing honours an outstanding leader in nursing research with the Pat Griffin Scholar Award. This year’s winner is UBC nursing professor Bernard Garrett, a scholar with a passion and commitment to advancing the quality of nursing education. His area of research is focused on the use of educational technologies, in particular virtual and augmented reality in the support of clinical nursing skills. Click here for more information.

Engineers embrace new Iron Pin Ceremony

A total of 2400 students, faculty and staff have promised to abide by a code of ethics during Iron Pin Ceremonies launched this fall by the UBC Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS), Vancouver campus. The new tradition marks each student’s entrance into the path of a professional course of study and commitment to abiding by a code of ethics. The ceremony also serves to welcome new students as UBC engineers.  For more information, click here.
