Writer-director Bruce Sweeney, a UBC Theatre & Film alumnus, will launch his new comedy, The Dick Knost Show, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). A made-in-Vancouver movie about a hockey talk show host, it stars Theatre & Film associate professor Tom Scholte as a caustic sports talk show host who faces his karma when he mocks the dangers of concussions and suffers a head injury himself.

UBC Library has acquired a manuscript titled Compendium Theologicae Veritatis (or Compendium of Theological Truth). Originated in France and copied in the 14th century, it will be the oldest book in UBC Library’s collections and was a popular tome for university students more than 700 years ago.

Richard Pollard, a post-doctoral Fellow in UBC’s Department of History, advised the Library on the purchase of the medieval manuscript and will use it as classroom text for history students enrolled in his undergraduate classes spanning the early, central and late Middle Ages.

The manuscript will be housed at Rare Books and Special Collections located on level one of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. Visit UBC Library’s site to learn more.

Prof. Janusz Laskowski will be honoured at the 50th Symposium of Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing, a symposium which he founded. The symposium is held in conjunction with The Mineral Engineering Conference (MEC2013) on Sept. 6 – 19 in Swieradow-Zdroj, Lower Silesia, Poland. For more information, click here.

On Sept. 3, 2013, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences hosted the Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) Poster Competition. Participating students presented 19 posters showcasing their research projects. First place was awarded to Riley Walsh, supervised by faculty member Dr. Kishor Wasan for her poster titled “Efficacy of an oral and tropically stable lipid-based formulation of Amphotericin B (iCo-010) in an experimental mouse model of systemic candidiasis.” To read more, click here.

The David Lam Management Research Library is the latest UBC Library branch to participate in the Great Reads program, which offers leisure-reading materials for campus residents, community members, faculty, staff and students.

The Great Reads collection at David Lam Library includes more than 40 titles on a range of popular business topics. Users can visit the Great Reads website to view the books on offer at the David Lam Library, submit suggested titles and check out Google Books reviews. They can also browse the titles available at Great Reads displays located at Koerner Library, Woodward Library and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.
