UBC Applied Science employee wins national service award

UBC Engineering Co-operative Education Program director Jenny Reilly has won the Meritorious Service Award from the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) in recognition of her work as Chair of CAFCE’s Accreditation Committee and her work on the accreditation guidelines for Canadian co-op programs over the past several years. Pharmacists provide additional line of defense for detecting knee osteoarthritis

A team of Canadian researchers have determined that community-based pharmacists could provide an added resource in identifying knee osteoarthritis (OA). Led by Dr. Carlo Marra, director with the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) and professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences UBC, the study represents the first evidence supporting a collaborative approach to managing knee OA.

UBC researchers win Best Paper Award from the 2012 IEEE International Conference

UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering PhD candidate Hamidreza Boostanimehr and Professor Vijay K. Bhargava won Best Paper Award at the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications held in Beijing Aug. 15-17. Their paper, “Outage Analysis and Relay Allocation for Multi-stream OFDM Decode-and-Forward Rayleigh Fading Networks,” examines the outage behaviour of cooperative systems. Two UBC students named Action Canada Fellows

Two UBC students have been recognized for their leadership and named Action Canada Fellows. Action Canada, a national organization that aims to create a network of skilled leaders for Canada’s future, recognized 17 emerging leaders across Canada in 2012/2013.

• Ben Paylor, PhD candidate researching cardiac stem-cell biology at UBC, uses filmmaking, animation and writing to promote public interest in, and understanding of, science.
• Andrew Pilliar, lawyer and board chair of a Neighbourhood House in Vancouver, is completing a Master of Laws at UBC to further his interest in improving access to civil justice.

UBC students win Global Business Challenge

UBC engineering students took top prize at the KnowledgeWorks Global Student Business Concept Challenge at Virginia Tech in Roanoke,Virginia. The team won for their VersiCool device, designed for the pre-hospital and in-hospital settings, enabling rapid cooling in the early stages following a cardiac arrest. UBC engineering co-op students support research

In summer of 2012, engineering co-op students worked with the Brain Behaviour Lab in the Faculty of Medicine assisting with matlab and labview programming for EEG-based research, conducting data analysis and database design/optimization in the Sauder School of Business, and completing experiments and computational work for particle research in the mathematics department.
