UBC Arts Wednesdays explore Vancouver’s links to China

Arts Wednesdays, a free public lecture series now in its 7th season, brings UBC’s Faculty of Arts to the community. Held at UBC Robson Square in downtown Vancouver, the fall 2010 season will feature a series devoted to China and its impact on B.C. All talks happen Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m.

Oct 20: Street Vendors in China

Are China’s vendors a blight on the urban face of a modernizing nation, or are they people who have been left behind by China’s booming economy and therefore deserve access to their meager livelihood? How does street vending in China compare to Vancouver’s recent embrace of the concept?

Oct. 27: Our Future as a Half-Chinese City: Lessons from History
Henry Yu, Associate Professor, History
Where is Vancouver headed and will you be left behind given the dramatic social and cultural change that has affected Vancouver in the past four decades?

Nov. 3: Tongue-tied: B.C.’s investment in Mandarin Language Education
Ross King, Professor and Head, Asian Studies and Duanduan Li, Chinese Language Program, Asian Studies
Has the province provided for the future?  Has education kept up with the shifting demographic?  What should our schools be doing?

All events are free to the public and take place at UBC Robson Square, 800 Robson Street, Vancouver.
