Orientation activities replace most first-day undergrad classes at UBC’s Vancouver campus

This advisory holds information about three orientation events happening in the next few days: International Student Orientation (Sept. 2-4): Residence Parent Orientation (Sept. 5); Imagine UBC (Sept. 7).

Imagine UBC: Undergraduate student orientation, Canada’s largest one-day orientation program

Date/Time: Tues., Sept. 7, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

First-year Program: Students meet in groups organized by faculty to meet other students, have questions answered, tour campus, and learn strategies for success.

Returning and Transfer Programs: Students attend events organized by faculty departments and programs.

Pep Rally: 2:15 – 3:15 p.m., First-year and transfer students attend the rally at UBC Thunderbird Arena

The Main Event: 2:00 – 5 p.m., Main Mall between Agronomy Road and University Blvd. Open to the entire UBC community, The Main Event will include information booths with food, games and giveaways, and main stage with performances

First-day classes at UBC’s Vancouver campus have been replaced with orientation activities for the majority of the more than 36,000 undergraduate students. For a list of the faculties involved visit: http://www.events.ubc.ca.

First-year students who participate are assigned to small groups and will meet their deans, take a campus tour, and attend a student success workshop.

Incoming transfer students can meet their counterparts and attend faculty events, the Pep Rally, and The Main Event.

Faculties and departments across campus have organized events throughout the day to help returning students meet professors, advisors and peers. Faculty specific events can be found at: www.events.ubc.ca.

UBC President Stephen J. Toope, Vice President, Students Brian Sullivan, and AMS President Bijan Ahmadian will speak at the 2:15 p.m. Pep Rally.

Imagine UBC was created 14 years ago by UBC students, and will be run by more than 800 volunteer student leaders this year.

UBC Residence Parent Orientation—More than 600 parents registered



Date/Time:  Sunday, Sept. 5, 10 a.m.–12 pm and 1:30 –3:30pm

Place: Totem Park Residence

UBC’s Vancouver campus welcomes more than 600 parents to the Residence Parent Orientation.

Residence Parent Orientation provides the opportunity for parents to learn more about residence on campus, and the opportunities, resources, programs, and support available in UBC residences and about how they can enhance the university experience for students. Parents will have the chance to learn all about the first-year experience.

(UBC will hold an orientation for parents of commuter students, or students living at home, on Saturday, Sept. 25. Sessions will be offered in Mandarin and English)

International Student Orientation

Date: September 2-4, 2010.

Place: UBC International House, activities at various locations around UBC and Vancouver

UBC Vancouver welcomes more than 1,300 new exchange and degree students from 143 countries for a three-day orientation program.

Through workshops and social activities, new students will learn about Canadian culture, campus resources, academic success, study permits, entry visas (temporary resident visas), health insurance, and employment.   In addition, parents of international students will take part in International Orientation.
