As Olympic competition gets underway, the University of British Columbia has related story ideas on the hockey venue, and the first medal awards.
Two U.S. students at UBC involved in medal awards
Phil Casey, of Colorado, who studies Geography and Visual Arts, is in a co-op education placement with a mining company which made the metal used in Olympic medals. Casey is also volunteering at the Truce Wall in the Olympic Village.
Amelia Daly, of Los Angeles, who studies Science, Geography and Visual Arts, will be guiding athletes from competition to the podium at Cypress Mountain for the freestyle snowboard and ski events.

Games begin today in birthplace of Canada’s national hockey team
When women’s hockey commences at UBC today, with Sweden taking on Switzerland, players will be skating in the birthplace of Canada’s national hockey team. UBC Hall of Famer Bob Hindmarch and the late Rev. Father David Bauer established Canada’s first national hockey team on this site at UBC in 1963 in preparation for the 1964 Winter Olympics. First medal winners will stand on student-built podia
Students and staff in UBC’s Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) were given the task of creating all 23 Olympic and Paralympic wooden medal podia and the 100 wooden medal trays for the 2010 Winter Games. More information.
