Engineering student wins Queen Elizabeth II scholarship
UBC student Parisa Bastani (BASc, Mechanical Engineering ’09) is the recipient of the 2009 Queen Elizabeth II British Columbia Centennial Scholarship. The $60,000 scholarship is awarded to a B.C. post-secondary student to help with graduate studies in other Commonwealth countries.
The scholarship was established by the province to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to British Columbia in May 1971 during the province’s centennial celebrations.

Food Services teams win in culinary competitions
Team UBC won the gold medal at the annual Canadian College and University Food Service Association (CCUFSA) Culinary Competition held in St. John’s. The UBC Food Services team included Executive Chef Piyush Sahay, Sage Chef Andy Chan, Pastry Chef Copin Sastrawidjaya and Kevin Dueck as catering support.
Team Canada won the silver medal at the UMass ‘Tastes of the World’ Culinary Conference. The team included UBC members Executive Chef Piyush Sahay, Residence Chef Steve Golob, and Commissary Chef Tony Grewal.
In the past five years, chefs from UBC have won five gold and three silver in eight culinary competitions.
Engineering student named on fuel cell patent wins scholarship
UBC engineering physics co-op student Keith Martin, specializing in the Mechatronics Option, has been awarded one of three B.C. Technology Industry Association (BCTIA) scholarship grants for $2,500.
Martin was awarded for his work in fuel cell research during his eight-month co-op placement at Ballard Power Corporation, which resulted in his name being listed on a Ballard U.S. patent for a special sealant used on fuel-cell stacks.

Spin-off Energy Aware named most promising start-up
Energy Aware Technology Inc., developed by a team of UBC engineering and business alumni, has won the Most Promising Start-Up Technology Impact Award from the British Columbia Technology Industry Association (BCTIA). The team includes UBC applied sciences alumni Lauren Kulokas, Colby Gore, Jon Hallam and Adrian Black, Sauder School of Business alumni Janice Cheam and Colin McKerracher, and SFU applied sciences graduate Troy Tyler.
Energy Aware Technology designed their flagship product PowerTab In Home Display to enable homeowners to closely track their energy use and costs. The product has been included in each unit of the Vancouver 2010 Athlete’s Olympic Village and is in trials with electric utilities in other countries.

CLSRN affiliates receive awards
UBC affiliates of the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network (CLSRN) have recently received awards for their work. CLSRN is a network of academic researchers interested in strengthening the understanding of the Canadian labour market.
UBC Asst. Prof. Kevin Milligan, Dept. of Economics, Michael Baker, from the University of Toronto and Jonathan Gruber, from MIT, received the Purvis Prize for their paper Universal childcare, maternal labor supply, and family well-being, published in the Journal of Political Economy in 2008. The Purvis Prize is for a work of excellence relating to Canadian economic policy.
UBC PhD candidate Kim Lehrer won the Albert Berry Prize for best paper by a junior scholar in the Canadian Development Economics Study Group at the Canadian Economics Association meetings. The award was for her paper Gender Differences in Labour Market Participation During Conflict: Evidence from Displaced People’s Camps in Northern Uganda.
UBC Asst. Prof. Kevin Milligan, Dept. of Economics, also received the Harry Johnson Prize for the best paper in the Canadian Journal of Economics. Milligan shared this prize with Marie Rekkas from SFU for their paper Campaign spending limits, incumbent spending, and election outcomes.

UBC alumna heads Peru donation drive
With the support of UBC alumna Carmen Forsberg, UBC is organizing a donation drive to collect and send winter clothes and blankets to Peru. Forsberg, who works in Peru, is witnessing firsthand the devastation caused by record-cold temperatures.
Clean, new or used winter clothes (all ages) and blankets will be accepted until July 10 at donation stations located at: Marine Drive Residence, Fairview/Acadia Park Commonsblock, Brock Hall, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, UBC Childcare, and International House.
The Peruvian Consulate will be in charge of shipping the donations and will work with Caritas Peru (caritas.org.pe) for the donations to reach the appropriate destination.
