UBC alumni and professors win eight Leo awards
UBC Film Production alumni and adjunct professors have won eight 2009 Leo Awards. The Leo Awards recognize excellence in film and television in B.C.
Producer and alumnus Stephen Hegyes ‘ feature length drama Fifty Dead Men Walking won Best Feature Length Drama. Recent graduate and writer/director Mathew Gordon Long’s short film The Anachronism won five awards including Best Short Drama, which he shared with alumni producers Andria Spring and Jessica Cheung .
Adjunct Prof. Anne Wheeler received Best Direction in a Feature Length Drama for the film Living Out Loud . Adjunct Prof. Ian Kerr won Best Cinematography in an Information or Lifestyle Series for the television series She’s Crafty .
Editor and alumnus Fred Thorsen won Best Picture Editing in Feature Length Drama for Stone of Destiny . This film will be showcased by the UBC Film Production Alumni Association at their upcoming 40th Anniversary kick-off screening event on May 31 at the Vancity Theatre.

UBC engineering students win scholarships
Two UBC engineering students have won the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation Scholarship (CEMF).
Kerry Black , a civil engineering student in the Masters of Applied Science program, will receive the CEMF 2009 AMEC Masters Scholarship in Engineering, which includes a $10,000 award and an opportunity for a summer job at an AMEC office in Canada.
Third-year chemical engineering student Lin Watt has been named the recipient of the CEMF scholarship in B.C. Watt is one of five top undergraduate women engineering students in Canada who is acknowledged by CEMF and will receive a $5,000 award.

New breast cancer study led by UBC professor
A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute shines more light on the pathology of breast cancer tumours. The study, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Torsten Nielsen , UBC Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, paves the way for more personalized treatment options for women diagnosed with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

Schools of Nursing launches game
Nursing students from UBC’s Vancouver campus collaborated with students from UBC Okanagan’s School of Nursing and the College of Registered Nurses of B.C. to develop an interactive game that educates student nurses about standards of practice.
The UBC School of Nursing will launch the Jeopardy-style game on May 20.

Conversations on Occupation Café
The Dept. of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy presents the next Conversation on Occupation Cafe – Welcome to Reality: Occupations in Real and Virtual Environments .
Assoc. Prof. Tal Jarus , Head of Dept. of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, and Debbie Rand , Post-Doctoral Fellow in rehabilitation research, will discuss using objects in motor learning and therapy compared with rehabilitation in technology enhanced environments.
