AVP of Academic Affairs receives International Ziegfeld Award

Anna Kindler, UBC Assoc. Vice President, Academic Affairs, will receive the United States Society for Education through Art 2009 International Ziegfeld Award. The award will be given at the National Art Education Association Conference in Minneapolis.

The International Ziegfeld Award honours leaders who have made significant contributions to art education.

UBC student to represent Canada in G8 University Students’ Summit

UBC student Davis Chiu, a fourth-year PhD candidate of chemical and biological engineering, will represent Canada in the 2009 G8 University Students’ Summit.

Chiu will be one of two students from Canada at the summit held in May at the Istituto Siciliano di Storia Patria in Palermo, Italy.

MagNet research network receives NSERC funding

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) recently announced funding for seven strategic research networks, including the Magnesium Network (MagNet) hosted by UBC. Under the direction of Dept. of Materials Engineering Prof. Warren Poole, MagNet connects a team from industry, government and five Canadian universities to focus on reducing vehicle weight using wrought-magnesium alloys.

UBC professor leads plant study project

UBC plant biologist Prof. Loren Rieseberg will lead an Indiana University Bloomington team that has been awarded an $8 million, four-year National Science Foundation grant to study the genetics of economically important and evolutionarily interesting plant species. Rieseberg has joint appointments at IU Bloomington and UBC.

Student team MosaStore places second in Ivey Business Competition

MosaStore, a team including electrical engineering PhD candidate Samer Al-Kiswany and Sauder MBA student Swaneesh Shatmanyu, won second place and a $10,000 prize in the IBK Capital – Ivey Business Plan Competition.

Student team EasyPlug wins New Entrepreneur Award

UBC student team EasyPlug was a winner at the TiEQuest Business Plan competition held in Toronto. The undergraduate team of engineering and commerce students was given the New Entrepreneur Award and received a $5,000 prize.

Green College welcomes Ludmilla Jordanova as Visiting Professor

Ludmilla Jordanova, a leading historian of science, medicine and portraiture, will be in residence at UBC’s Green College as a Cecil H. and Ida Green Visiting Professor from April 3-7.

New Venture Design holds open house

New Venture Design (APSC 486/COMM 486), a year-long program run jointly between Sauder School of Business and the Faculty of Applied Science, will give a presentation of this year’s four teams, their products and business plans. In attendance will be graduates who have started companies and the faculty and industry people behind the course.
