Call for nominations – UBC awards for outstanding volunteer contributions
Nominations for outstanding volunteer contributions to UBC are now being accepted for the following awards.
- The Slonecker Award for Outstanding Volunteer Contribution to UBC
- The Outstanding Student Award for Volunteer Contributions to UBC

Annual UBC Remembrance Day ceremony
This year, UBC’s Remembrance Day ceremony will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The ceremony will include music by the UBC School of Music, short readings and remarks. UBC Vice-President, External, Legal and Community Relations, Stephen Owen; AMS President Michael Duncan and Dr. John Blatherwick, former Chief Medical Health Officer for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Honorary Colonel with the Canadian Forces Reserves will be among this year’s speakers.
Date: Nov. 11
Time: Doors open at 10 a.m., ceremony begins at 10:50 (45 minutes)
Place: War Memorial Gym

UBC opens new Centre for Research in Chinese Language and Literacy Education
UBC’s Faculty of Education has opened the new Centre for Research in Chinese Language and Literacy Education thanks to the commitment of $500,000 from the Office of Chinese Language Council International (“Hanban”) in Beijing.
Housed within the Faculty of Education’s Dept. of Language and Literacy Education, the Centre will serve as a hub for world-class researchers and scholars to contribute to Chinese language teaching, testing, curriculum and materials development, including the uses of new digital technologies.
The official UBC-Hanban Agreement was signed by UBC Education Dean Rob Tierney and Madame Xu Lin, Director General of Hanban in October 2007 at East China Normal University in Shanghai.

UBC students recognized at physics conference
Undergraduate students Firas Moosvi and Ruobing Yang won Top Student Talk awards at the 2008 Canadian Undergraduate Physics Conference in Toronto.
Moosvi won in the category of medical physics for his presentation Characterizing Galbumin as a contrast agent in small animals using perfusion MRI and immunofluorescence.
Yang won in the category of biological physics for his talk Calibration of Magnetic Tweezers instrument for pulling on single DNA molecules using subpicoNewton forces.

UBC students win at opera competition
Students from the UBC Opera Ensemble won five out of six prizes at the Metropolitan Opera competition in Vancouver.
Three of the winners Justin Welsh, Stephanie Nakagawa and Suzanne Rigden
advance to the Region Finals in Seattle in January. Rachel Fenlon and Sunny Shams received Honourable Mentions.

UBC Press publications win awards
Awards have been given for the following UBC Press publications:
- States of Nature: Conserving Canada’s Wildlife in the Twentieth Century, written by UBC Dept. of History’s Assoc. Prof. Tina Loo, won the Harold Adams Innis Prize, presented by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) for Best English work in the social sciences
- National Visions, National Blindness: Canadian Art and Identities in the 1920s, won the CFHSS Raymond Klibansky Prize for Best English work in the humanities
- Multicultural Education Policies in Canada and the United States, received the Critics’ Choice Award from the American Educational Research Association
UBC professor at neuroethics meeting
UBC Neurology Dept.’s Prof. Judy Illes will be the panel moderator for a talk entitled Discussion of the Ethics of Deep Brain Stimulation at the first Neuroethics Society Annual Meeting held Nov. 13 – 14 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Mechanical engineering student receives Gartshore Fellowship
Mechanical engineering graduate student Adrian Armstrong has been awarded the Gartshore Graduate Entrance Fellowship, a one-year award given to top new graduate students in mechanical engineering.
UBC Red Cross hosts World AIDS Week
In support of AIDS awareness, UBC Red Cross will be hosting a week of events leading to World AIDS Day on Nov. 21.
Red ribbons and Little Travelers will be sold to help with donations to benefit people living with AIDS. This year will also mark UBC’s first Wear Red Day for AIDS on Nov. 21.

Sauder students host conference
Students from the UBC Sauder School of Business will host Enterprize Canada, a conference connecting students through interactive workshops and social events.
The February 2009 event will include a business plan competition with a prize pool worth more than $100,000. The deadline for competition registration is Nov. 16.

LOOP exhibition at Koerner Library
The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory presents LOOP, an exhibit by UBC students from VISA (Visual Art) 470A, exploring the nature and perception of time through video, print media, photography, installation and sound.
