UBC community members appointed to Order of Canada

Prof. David Sweet, Faculty of Dentistry; Prof. Victor Ling, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; and Prof. Emeritus Timothy Oke, Geography; have been appointed Officers of the Order of Canada. Kim Campbell, Law alumna, has been appointed Companion of the Order of Canada. These appointments were given by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on Canada Day.

  1. Sweet is recognised for his work in forensic odontology — the science of victim identification using dental charts and analysis of teeth — and for his contributions as a teacher, researcher and consultant. 

  2. Ling is recognised for his contributions as a health care leader, including his research around why certain cancers become drug-resistant.

  3. Oke is recognised for his research in meteorology and urban climatology, and his mentoring of generations of geographers.

  4. Campbell is recognised for her contributions to Canadian politics and her leadership in the promotion of global democracy, international cooperation and women in politics.

Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is the highest honour awarded to Canadian citizens for a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Dean’s last day celebrated with student prank

Prof. Michael IsaacsonProf. Michael Isaacson, Faculty of Applied Science, arrived for his last official day as Dean of Applied Science to find Engineering’s notorious red Volkswagen beetle parked in front of his desk. The car was fully equipped with a webcam to catch the dean’s shocked expression and instructions on whom to contact for removal.
 
Isaacson served 11 years as dean, and will continue over the summer to act as Special Advisor to the Acting Dean as preparations are finalized for a replacement. In September, he will take administrative leave to continue his research in coastal and ocean engineering.

CFIS welcomes associate principals

Prof. Sneja Gunew, Department of English, and Prof. Timothy Cheek, Institute of Asian Research, have accepted positions with UBC’s College for Interdisciplinary Studies (CFIS). Cheek has already joined CFIS as Associate Principal, Teaching and Strategic Initiatives. Gunew will join CFIS on Aug. 1 as Associate Principal, Research and Faculty.

New director for SCARP

Prof. Penny GursteinAs of July 1, Prof. Penny Gurstein will fill the role of Director of the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) in the College for Interdisciplinary Studies. Gurstein has served as Acting Director over the last academic year. Her area of research is the socio-cultural aspects of community planning, with particular emphasis on populations marginalized in planning processes.

Inter UBC Canada wins world cup

Inter UBC football (soccer) teamThe Inter UBC football (soccer) team — four masters players from UBC and four players from the local community — are Champions of the Universities Master’s World Cup 6-a-side Football Tournament and Symposium. The tournament took place in Switzerland last month. The Inter UBC team trained for six months and played 12 nations to win the tournament for the second time, having won in 2006.

10-12 teams from different countries participate in this event. Teams consist of eight to ten players — all over 45 years old — from staff, club and/or community teams. The tournament takes place every two years, and includes an international symposium on Masters’ football communities.

Wrestling summer camp comes to UBC

Olympic and World Champion Daniel Igali will be the host of UBC’s Wrestling Club summer camp, along with Olympic silver medalist and World Champion Guivi Sissaouri. The camp is for youth aged 12-19.

Igali, Sissaouri and other clinicians will teach timing, technique and mat strategy, as well as psychology, gymnastics, weight training and conditioning.

International research symposium on the patient’s voice

The UBC College of Health Disciplines and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council will sponsor the 2008 Patient’s Voice International Research Symposium, where international experts in interprofessional health care communication will explore how value can be added by involving patients and the community in all aspects of health care.

Speakers include Assoc. Principal Lesley Bainbridge, College of Health Disciplines, and Prof. John Spencer, professor in Medical Education in Primary Health Care and Sub Dean for Primary and Community Care. The evening will be chaired by Assoc. Dean Angela Towle, Undergraduate Education, Faculty of Medicine.
