UBC elections for Chancellor, Board and Senate
UBC is conducting elections for its 17th Chancellor, faculty and staff representatives to the Board of Governors, and representatives to the Okanagan and Vancouver Senates. Voting ends Nov. 26.

Theatre and labs successfully upgraded through UBC Project Services
A 30-year-old lecture theatre and two labs have received upgrades. The Instructional Resource Centre Lecture Theatre #6 now has new lighting, acoustics, audio visual and media equipment, and unique “pod” seating to encourage group interaction. The Cunningham Pharmacy Lab 282 upgrade, completed earlier this year, consolidated two labs into one large research lab of approximately 1900 sq/ft.
UBC’s Project Services Group, part of UBC Plant Operations and UBC Land and Building Services, managed both projects. Project Services is a fee-for-service group of professionals who provide UBC clients with design and project management services in building renovations, facility upgrades, restoration, consulting and capital construction projects. Past projects include Ecotrek, a $39 million project to improve energy consumption across campus, and UBC Renew Phase 1, a $120 million project to remodel teaching and research space.
Carlo Finamore, Project Manager for these upgrades, has completed numerous UBC projects over the past 20 years.

UBC teams dominate high-tech contest
UBC teams finished first and second in the Pacific Northwest regional competition of the Association of Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest last week. UBC students Anton Likhtarov (Computer Science), Patrick Nguyen (Computer Science) and Henry Wong (Electrical and Computer Engineering) solved all 11 problems during the five-hour contest to claim first place, beating teams from Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Washington and SFU.
Computer Science students Chris Head, Robert Tseng and Simon Suyadi placed second, while the third UBC team placed tenth out of 76 teams. All three teams are coached by Kaitlin Duck Sherwood and Prof. Alan Hu, both of the Department of Computer Science. The top UBC team will head to the World Finals in Banff, Alberta, in April.

UBC professor appointed president of international committee
Materials Engineering Prof. Anoush Poursartip has been elected president of the International Committee on Composite Materials (ICCM), a non-governmental, not-for-profit, scientific and engineering organization promoting international cooperation and education in composite materials science and technology. Poursartip is also a Life Member and one of 12 ICCM World Fellows.

UBC Film alumnae take home awards
UBC Film alumna Michelle Porter has received the Special Jury Award at the Asian International Short Film Festival in Seoul, Korea, for her short film Regarding Sarah, the story of an elderly woman who is losing her memory. The film has already won six Leo Awards and several festival awards. Other UBC alumni who collaborated on the film include producer Amy Belling, cinematographer Shannon Kohli and editor Lauren Mainland.

UBC Film alumna Carmen Forsberg has received the Destination Inspiration Prize at Air Canada’s enRoute Student Film Festival for her short documentary Q’Oyllur Rotti – God of the Snow Mountain, an account of Forsberg’s pilgrimage from Cuzco to Mahuayani in her native Peru.

UBC professor receives mathematics award
Mathematics Assoc. Prof. Jozsef Solymosi was awarded the 2008 Andre-Aisenstadt Prize from le Centre de recherches mathématiques for his research in additive combinatorics. Solymosi joins four colleagues in the Department of Mathematics who have won this national prize since 2002.

UBC professors to speak on global democracy
Prof. Michael Byers, Director of the Liu Institute for Global Issues, UBC Prof. Emeritus Patricia Marchak, Prof. Terry Farrell, of the Department of Political Science at Douglas College, and SFU student Melissa Baril will lead a forum on Global Democracy at the UN: Why, How, When?
This forum is part of the international Campaign for the Establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) and is hosted by The World Federalist Movement-Canada, partner to UNPA. The event will take place on Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hewett Centre, Unitarian Church, 949 W. 49th Ave. at Oak St.

Reminder of Trudeau Fellowship deadline
The Trudeau Fellowships are awarded for a period of three years and include a sum of $150,000 plus a $75,000 research allowance. The Trudeau Foundation does not accept direct applications for these awards, but establishes a list of candidates based on suggestions submitted. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 22.

Nominations open for academic awards
Nominations are now open for the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia (CUFA BC) Distinguished Academics Awards. Two awards are given each year: the Career Achievement Award, and Academic of the Year. Nominations are due Jan. 21, 2008.
CUFA BC represents 4,300 professors, instructors, professional librarians and other academic staff at UBC SFU, U Vic and Royal Roads University. Their mandate is to advocate quality and accessibility in post-secondary education and research.

Darwin’s finches on the Galapagos Islands
The Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC presents a public lecture by biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant on their evolutionary research on birds on the Galapagos Islands. The Grants and their work are the subjects of the Pulitzer Prize winning book Beak of the Finch by Jonathan Weiner.

UBC professor lectures on risk and morality
Assist. Prof. James Tansey of UBC’s Sauder School of Business will lecture on Risk, Morality and the End of the World. Tansey will focus on the work of anthropologist Mary Douglas and present a manifesto for research in the field of business ethics.
The lecture, hosted by the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics and the Sauder School of Business, will take place on Nov. 22 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the lecture hall at St. John’s College, 2111 Lower Mall. For more information, visit www.ethics.ubc.ca.
Sounds Like Canada interviews David Suzuki
Sounds Like Canada, a CBC national radio show hosted by Shelagh Rogers, will present a live interview with Dr. David Suzuki at 8 p.m. on Nov. 22 at Heritage Hall in Vancouver. Tickets are no longer available, but the show is still accepting suggestions for an additional guest from the Vancouver area to appear alongside Suzuki.
